CT/CAT SCAN
CT (Computerized Tomography) or CAT (Computerized Axial Tomography) is an advanced imaging technique that combines multiple X-ray images to produce detailed cross-sectional views of the body. Unlike traditional X-rays, a CT scan provides high-precision images, making it useful for diagnosing conditions affecting the brain, lungs, heart, abdomen, and more. Doctors commonly use computed tomography for detecting tumors, fractures, infections, and internal bleeding.
A head CT scan is often performed to examine the brain for strokes, tumors, or injuries, while a lung scan helps detect infections or abnormalities in the respiratory system. A heart CT scan can provide insights into coronary artery disease, and an abdominal scan helps evaluate issues related to organs like the liver, kidneys, and intestines.
For optimal results, patients need to remain still during the scan. In some cases, a contrast dye (contrast CT scan) is used to enhance visibility of blood vessels and organs, administered either orally or via injection. Some scans, such as a calcium CT scan, assess heart health by measuring plaque buildup in arteries. A cardiac CT scan is commonly used to evaluate heart conditions, while a contrast CT scan may be an option when your doctor wishes to have a detailed medical imaging. Before the procedure, inform your doctor about any metal implants, known dye allergies, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
A CT scan is better suited to cancer, pneumonia, abnormal chest x-rays, bleeding in the brain, especially after an injury.

- It is useful for obtaining images of:
- Soft tissues
- The pelvis
- Blood vessels
- Lungs
- Brain
- A CT scan is better suited to cancer, pneumonia, abnormal chest x-rays, bleeding in the brain, especially after an injury.
- Shows organ tear and organ injury more quickly, making it more suitable for trauma cases.
