Test Code -HT1370
Homocysteine is an amino acid, and elevated levels in the blood can indicate an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, stroke, and cognitive decline. This test is essential for assessing the risk of atherosclerosis, particularly in individuals with a history of heart disease or those who smoke or have high blood pressure.
Description
Homocysteine is a naturally occurring amino acid in the body, produced during the breakdown of dietary protein. While it plays a normal role in metabolism, elevated levels in the blood—known as hyperhomocysteinemia—can be a warning sign for serious health issues. High homocysteine is increasingly recognized as a risk factor for heart disease, stroke, blood clots, and even cognitive decline. It may damage the inner lining of blood vessels, contribute to the formation of artery-clogging plaque, and increase the likelihood of clotting. Elevated levels have also been associated with Alzheimer’s disease, osteoporosis, and pregnancy complications such as neural tube defects. Several factors can contribute to high homocysteine, including deficiencies in vitamins B6, B12, and folate, genetic mutations like MTHFR, kidney problems, lifestyle factors such as smoking and alcohol use, and certain medications. Fortunately, homocysteine levels can be tested through a simple blood test and are typically manageable through dietary and lifestyle changes. Eating foods rich in B-vitamins—such as leafy greens, legumes, whole grains, dairy, and lean proteins—can help maintain healthy levels.Testing is especially useful for individuals with a family history of cardiovascular issues, those planning pregnancy, or people experiencing unexplained fatigue, memory problems, or symptoms of vitamin deficiency. Though often overlooked, homocysteine is a powerful marker of overall health, and monitoring it can offer a proactive approach to preventing chronic disease and supporting long-term well-being.
